Starting School

Starting school is a big milestone—for both children and parents! It’s completely natural to feel a mix of excitement and nerves as you prepare for this new chapter. Here’s a helpful guide to ease the transition and make the process as smooth as possible.

The Journey to Starting School

1. Applying for a Place – Applications go through T&W Admissions. Once a place is allocated, the school will contact you to confirm the next steps.
2. Taster Day – Your child gets to visit the school, explore the setting, and start feeling comfortable in their new environment.
3. Induction Days – A crucial part of the transition:

  • Your child spends two days at school, getting familiar with the Early Years Setting (EYS).
  • Children meet their new classmates and teachers.
  • A special moment—you and your child will share a school meal together, easing them into the routine.

4. Parental meeting with the Headteacher – Whilst your child is visiting the setting parents meet with the Headteacher and staff. During this meeting key information is shared – You’ll receive details on:

  • Start & finish times – School routines and expectations.
  • Uniform – Guidelines on what your child will wear.
  • Forest School & PE – Special activities they’ll participate in.
  • Means of contact – How to stay informed and communicate with the school.
  • Expectations – Understanding school policies and what’s needed for a great start.
You will also be supported by school staff in completing all necessary paperwork, including new starter documents and Free School Meals (FSM) paperwork.

Preparing Your Child for School

  • Talk Positively About School – Share excitement about learning, making new friends, and having fun.
  • Practice Independence – Encourage skills like dressing themselves, using the toilet independently, and tidying up.
  • Visit the School Together – Help them feel comfortable by exploring the surroundings before the first day.
  • Routine Matters – Establish consistent bedtimes and morning routines to build familiarity.
  • Social Skills – Arrange playdates or group activities to help your child build confidence in meeting new friends.

Supporting Yourself as a Parent

It’s natural to feel emotional about this transition. Remember:

  • Your child is in a supportive environment where teachers nurture their growth.
  • Connecting with other parents can be reassuring—you’re not alone in this experience.
  • Trust the process—each child adapts at their own pace, and the school will support them every step of the way.

Starting school is an exciting adventure, and with preparation, your child will feel ready to take that big first step! You’ve got this. 🌟
