Y4 Our Krindlekrax stories!

Year 4 have enjoyed their Page Turner this half term, which is Krindlekrax by Philip Ridley.

In English, we have rewritten the story of how Ruskin became a hero and saved Lizard Street! We thoroughly enjoyed using similes to describe the monstrous Krindlekrax and describing how Ruskin bravely battled the beast to save Elvis.

If you want to read some of their amazing work, their stories are in the library for everyone to enjoy.

Y4 Alberto Giacometti inspired sculptures

In art this half term Year 4 have been studying modern, Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti. Giacometti is most famous for his sculptures, particularly his tall, thin figures which were often inspired by people he knew.

Year 4 sketched out their plans and then created their figurines using tinfoil. After that, they wrapped them in Modroc to make them sturdier and once they had dried, they painted them. Check out Year 4s creations below!

Our visit to the Gurdwara

Last week, we visited the Gurdwara in Telford. This was to support our learning about sacred places that we have been doing in RE this half term.

The children have been learning about all the things you would find in a Sikh temple. Children found the visit extremely informative, and they discovered lots of facts about the Sikh religion including that Sikh’s are vegetarian, they believe in reincarnation and that every day, they have something called Langar at the Gurdwara. Langar is a community kitchen and, as part of it, free vegetarian food is served in the kitchens of a Gurdwara (a Sikh temple) every day.

National Poetry Day

It was National Poetry Day on October the 3rd. This half term, Year 4 have done a poetry unit all about limericks. We found out that limericks were 5-line poems that are often silly or humorous.

We learnt all about syllables. Within limericks, lines 1, 2 and 5 should have 8-10 syllables and then lines 3 and 4 should have 5-6 syllables. We also discovered that in limerick poems, lines 1, 2 and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme (this means our limericks follow an AABBA rhyming pattern).

Children got to perform their Halloween-themed limericks to their peers and then also during our special National Poetry Day assembly.

Spelling homework

At Captain Webb, we follow the Oxford Owl spelling programme. We use Autumn 1 to recap tricky spelling rules from previous years such as silent letters, using the prefix dis- and in- and adding the suffix -ly.

We try and teach the children the key vocabulary of suffix and prefix:

Suffix – A letter or group of letters added at the end of a word to make a new word

Prefix – A letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word

The rest of the year focuses on Year 4 spelling rules such as:

  • Adding the prefix mis-
  • Words ending in sure
  • Ay sound spelt ei, eigh and ey
  • Words ending in ous
  • Adding ir to words beginning with r
  • Adding the suffix -ion

The last week of every half term will be an opportunity for teachers to assess and review the spellings rules taught that half term to close any gaps.

We also include several ‘orange words’ a week, which are tricky words from the Year 3 and 4 spelling lists. We try and pick orange words that link to our current writing units to encourage children to include them in their writing in English lessons.

Maths homework

The Year 4 Multiplication Timestable Check in is June 2026.

In class, we use the Numbersense programme which follows the 36 fact approach.

Our Maths homework will focus on becoming fluent in all our times tables. The children should have already learnt their 2, 5s and square numbers last year and we will look at the rest of the tables throughout the year.

Please encourage your child to practice their tables at home. We suggest some of the following websites:

Times Tables Rock Stars: Play (children’s TTRS log ins are stuck in their homework books)

Hit the Button – Quick fire maths practise for 6-11 year olds

Times tables games – Learn them all here!

MathShed – Mathematics game for school and home (a Multiplication Timestable Check simulator is available on this website)

Chester Visit

Year 4 had a fabulous visit to the Roman Deva Centre in Chester last Friday.

Our Year 4s made the journey across the English Channel to Britannia and found out Britain was under the rule of the Roman Emperor, Claudius! We travelled through a typical Roman town and found out lots about what the Romans ate, the entertainment they watched at the amphitheatres, how they learnt to read numbers and write and what a typical Roman bath and Roman public toilet looked like.

We then got to look at the different armour and weapons a Roman solider would use. Next, we got kitted out with our very own Roman swords and shields. We marched through the streets of Chester shouting a Latin chant. ‘SIN, SIN, SIN, DEX, SIN!’ which means LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT in Latin. We found a safe spot to practice some typical Roman soldier tactics. We learnt about command chants and soldier formations, which was why the Roman army was so successful at invading countries! Lastly, we got to practice everything we learnt with a quick gladiator duel in Chester’s very own amphitheatre … In the battle between teacher vs student … student won!
