Curriculum Framework Overview – Year 3

Year 3 Trips

Autumn 1: Tribal Tales

To learn all about the Stone Age, children will visit the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms.

Autumn 2: Gods and Mortals

To learn about the Ancient Greeks, a workshop is held at school with a visitor with engaging activities based on Ancient Greek life. Children are encouraged to come to school dressed as an Ancient Greek child for the day!

Spring 1: My Telford

This topic is based around learning about the history and development of Telford. For the children’s geography fieldwork, the children visit Dawley High Street and Telford Town Centre to compare the amenities available to residents. We then come back to school and debate on where the children would rather live.

Spring 2: Scrumdiddlyumptious

This half term, year 3 visit Cadbury World to learn all about chocolate – how it’s made, where the ingredients are grown and the importance of Fairtrade to third world farmers.

Summer 1: Rivers

To complete their geography unit, children visit Carding Mill Valley to test the rate of flow of the river.

Summer 2: Mountains

We are still deciding on the trip for this topic – stay tuned!

Prices for each trip will be announced by the office in due course.

Important days:

Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Children can come to school wearing their PE kits.

Forest school will be in summer 1. For this, children need to wear wellies and long sleeved tops and jumpers.

Parent workshops

During the year we will have 2 different parent workshops – 14th October and 12th June.

More details will be given on these closer to the time.

Homework expectations

Homework will consist of:

  • Spelling
    • 6 words to practise relating to our spelling rule for that week.
    • 2 words to practise from the year 3/4 statutory spelling list.
    • Children will have a spelling test at the end of the week.
  • Number sense (maths)
    • 4 activities based around the skill we are learning in class.
    • As the year goes on, the skills will be based on times tables ready for the times table check in year 4.
  • TT Rockstars
    • To practise their times tables, children are expected to use TT Rockstars as often as they can.
  • Reading
    • Children are to read 4 times a week with their reading book from school and noted down in their reading diary.

Homework will be given out on a Monday and back in on a Friday.

The teacher will mark their homework on a Friday. For each completed spelling, maths or read, the child will receive a dojo point. If a child completes all homework for the week, they will also receive a raffle ticket. If 100 raffle tickets are collected by the end of the half term, the class will receive a special treat!
