Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6 – the final and most exciting chapter of your primary school journey!

This year promises to be packed with fascinating topics, big questions, and unforgettable learning experiences. From exploring icy landscapes in Frozen Kingdom and discovering why penguins and polar bears never meet, to diving into the wonders of the human body in Blood Heart and asking, “How do we stay alive?”, there’s so much to uncover. We’ll follow Darwin’s footsteps in Darwin’s Delights, investigate where our food comes from in Living with the Land, and celebrate the vibrant culture and legacy of the Ancient Mayans in Hola Mexico. Alongside all this, we’ll also be helping you prepare for the exciting transition to secondary school, building your confidence, independence, and readiness for the next stage.

Staff in Year 6

Your class teachers in year 6 are Miss Saville, Miss Weston and Mr Pilling. We also have support from Mrs Tranter, who will be working with groups of children during planned intervention sessions. During Year 6, you will have a mixture of teachers for different lessons in preparation for secondary school.

Homework Expectations

Homework in Year 6 is all about building great habits, boosting confidence, and getting ready for secondary school – and we’re here to support every step of the way!

Here’s what to expect each week:

Reading – Read your class text or a book from our class library at least four times a week and record it in your Reading Record Book.
Spelling – Practise high-frequency words to sharpen your spelling skills.
Maths – Complete number sense activities to strengthen your maths understanding.

Homework is handed out every Monday and should be returned by Friday – although children are welcome to hand it in earlier if they wish.

Need help? A Homework Help Session is available every Thursday lunchtime. It’s your child’s responsibility to attend if they need support.

Rewards! Children will earn Class Dojos for completing homework. Reaching 50 Dojos means they can enjoy a non-uniform day – a fantastic incentive to keep up the great work!
