Summer 1 Week 2 ‘The Very Quiet Cricket’

This week the children have been looking at the book ‘The Very Quiet Cricket’. They have enjoyed making insects out of play-dough. Making summer drinks in the water tray. Also, they have been drawing different insects, first using the magnifying glasses to look at the insects in detail. The children have also been retelling the story using the tuff-tray and making worms out of honey hoops, where they were practicing their count and fine motor skills. The children also enjoyed collaging their cricket pictures.

Year 4 Think Tank trip

On Wednesday, Year 4 visited Think Tank as part of their science topic on the digestive system.

The children had lots of fun exploring the exhibits, especially the one that was all about the human body. We also got to take part in an interactive workshop all about the digestive system. We learnt about the food groups that should make up a healthy diet and what happens in our body once we eat our meals!

Year 4 Digestive System Science

FUN SCIENCE LESSON ALERT!

On Friday afternoon, Year 4 recreated a model of the digestive system.

The children chewed up their Weetabix, banana and biscuit, crushing it up like the mouth would do. They learnt that the saliva helps coat the food in the mouth, making it easier to swallow.

The mushy food mixture was then transferred into a sandwich bag (this was our stomach). They added orange juice, which represented the stomach acid, and this helped break down the food even further. After some more squishing, the food became a consistency similar to liquid. Then, our science activity got even more messy … we transferred this mixture into a pair of tights and squeezed out all the juice. This showed children what happens in the small intestine as this is where all the good and useful nutrients get absorbed into the bodies’ bloodstream. What is left is the waste that our body doesn’t need – and that is what comes out when we go to the toilet! Yuck!

Y1 Phonics Club

Our Year 1 children have been thoroughly enjoying their Phonics after school club this half term. They have loved playing games such as bingo and dominoes to practise reading and identifying special friends in words.

Y1 Read and Peel!

In Year 1 we love Phonics! We even practise at snack time. The children have loved looking for special friends and reading their word before they peel their banana.

From the garden

This week we read ‘From the garden’ and learned all about the different fruits and vegetables that grow in the garden. The children had a go at identifying different produce, chopping it and made their own salad to eat for snack.

We also did printing with the vegetables and explored the different shapes they make.

The children continued to explore the garden centre roleplay and made their own flowers to go inside.

Y1 DT Parent Workshop

In Year 1 we have been learning all about dinosaurs and we have written the story ‘We are going on a Dinosaur hunt.’ As part of our DT unit we made moving dinosaur pictures to go into our book corner for our stories. We made sure our pictures had a mechanism to make it move. We used levers to make the tail and jaw move and sliders to move dinosaurs along the ground. We invited our parents and carers in to help us and we couldn’t have done it without them!

Titch

This week we read Titch. The children have been focusing their learning on size, looking at big and small and full and empty. We have been exploring the jugs and cups in the water tray, building towers in construction and threaded hoops on spaghetti to see how tall we could make them.

The children have also been painting sunflowers and we had lots of fun planting our own sunflowers this week, ready to take home.
