Chinese New Year
Our Reception children have had a wonderful time celebrating Chinese New Year! We enjoyed dancing to festive music, making colourful dragons, creating beautiful lanterns and painting our very own dragon pictures. The children loved learning about the traditions and sharing in the celebrations together.
In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 9. We have been busy sorting objects into groups that show 9 and not 9, helping us to recognise and understand the number in different ways. We are so proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm the children have shown!
Year 5 Spelling Bee Competition!
On Thursday 26th February, 8 lucky Year 5 students were invited along to take part in the Haberdashers’ Adams annual Spelling Bee Competition!

Children took part in 6 rounds, all based on Spelling Rules that they have learnt throughout their time in Years 3 -5!
Round 1: Spelling Bee – Our Captain Webb Spelling Bees were tasked with correctly spelling 30 tricky words!

Round 2: The Beehive – A quick 8 minute round where children needed to find as many words as possible ensuring that they used the middle letter in all their words!

Round 3: Crossword – The teams were given clues to uncover words that were needed to fill in the crossword gaps… and ensure they spelt them correctly too!

Round 4: Anagrams – A difficult challenge but not for our spelling superstars! They needed to unscramble the letters to work out the answer to one-lined clues.

Round 5: Guess the word – Children read the challenging riddles to guess the mystery word.

Final Round: Escape room – The Spelling Detectives were asked to crack the 10 digit code by answering word related clues that were all to do with spelling.

The children had so much fun and Mrs Cottrell is so proud of their determination and effort! Well done!!

Week 6 Zoom Rocket Zoom
The last week of our Spring 1 term we looked at the book Zoom Rocket Zoom. The children enjoyed going on a space mission in space shuttle role play. The children also enjoyed making a big rocket outside with the wooden blocks, where we flew to new planets and met aliens. The children also enjoyed the multi-sensory star hunts in the compost and the slime, this was where they were practicing their maths skills. The children also enjoyed making their own junk model rockets.
Week 1 Spring 2. Farmer in the Dell
This week we were looking at the nursery rhyme ‘Farmer in the Dell’. The have been enjoying the new role play of a farm shop. They have also been using their comparison skills when sorting the veg in the sand. The children have also been making their own 2d shape tractors. Using the play dough to create their own vegetables and singing 5 Speckled Frogs in the water tray. The children also enjoyed playing the instruments while sing ‘Farmer in the Dell and Old Mc Donald’.
Chinese New Year and Farm on Wheels
This week the children have been celebrating Chinese New Year by trying Chinese food, creating Chinese lanterns and Chinese dragon prints. Also this week the children got to go and meet all the animals at the Farm on Wheels. Racket the donkey, Cinderella and Captain Drake the ducks. They also got to feed the 1 week old baby lambs who were yet to be named. A mother hen and her 2 chicks and what I think was their favourite part … petting the Guinea pig.

STARBOOKS

Girls Football Tournament

On Thursday we took a team to the Year 5/6 Girls T&W tournament at TCAT. We won our first 2 group matches and drew our third meaning we went through to the semi finals which we also won 2-0. In the final we played against Old Park, the game finished 0-0 after extra time so we went to penalties where we unfortunately lost. Although it was tough to lose the final on penalties the girls showed fantastic attitude and togetherness the whole tournament, highlighted especially by the fact they only conceded 1 goal in the 5 games they played.
