Welcome to Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

The Year 4 teachers this year are Miss Read and Miss Rowlands and our teaching assistant is Mrs Farley.

Miss Read’s favourite subjects to teach are English and science and on the weekend, she enjoys reading and cooking new recipes. Miss Rowlands’ enjoys teaching art and maths and in her spare time, she enjoys walking her dog and reading. Mrs Farley loves going to concerts, walking her dog and buying new Crocs!

Our Curriculum

This year we have lots of fun topics planned. From learning about the vicious Vikings, some of the worlds exploding volcanoes and then diving deep into our bodies digestive system! Below you will see our yearly overview, which shows what we will be covering each half term.

Curriculum Framework Overview – Year 4

Trips and Visits

Throughout the year, Year 4 get to experience lots of exciting trips and visits to help with their learning.

Autumn 1 – Deva Roman Discovery Centre

As part of our Roman topic, children will look at the impact that the Romans had on Britain. They will get to experience what it would have been like to be part of the Roman army!

Spring 1 – Pond Dipping

Our Science unit this half term is all about Living Things and their Habitats. We look at classifying invertebrates and vertebrates and studying the animals that live in our local area. We also look at how pollution is affecting our environment and the impact it has on living things.

Spring 2 – Saxon Experience and Arthog Residential

In Spring 2, we have an exciting visitor come in – Erik Eriksson, a fearsome Saxon warrior! Children will get to experience what life was like in the Saxon era whilst exploring real-life artefacts.

We will also be going on our Arthog residential this half term. It is a two-night residential in Wales where children will get the chance to do activities like canoeing, gorge walking and team building exercises. This trip will take place from Wednesday 18th March – Friday 20th March 2026.

Summer 1 – Think Tank

As part of our topic on the digestive system, we will visit Think Tank Science Museum. Whilst there, we will take part in the ‘Under Your Skin’ workshop which shows us what happens to our food as it goes through our body.

Summer 2 – Harry Potter Studios

Finally, in Summer 2, our class text is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Our writing units for this half term include a portal narrative about Diagon Alley and Platform 9 and three quarters, and a persuasive advert for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! What better way to inspire the children than by visiting the Harry Potter Studios!

Important Dates

In Year 4, PE is taught twice a week. Once on a Tuesday afternoon by their class teacher and then on a Thursday afternoon by Crossbar.

Year 4 will do their Forest School sessions in Spring 2 and more information will follow closer to the time.

Our Christmas Carol Concert will be in the afternoon on Thursday 18th December 2025.

Our Year 4 class assembly will be on the 30th January 2026 where we invite parents in to showcase what we’ve been learning about so far!

Our parent workshops this year will take place on Friday 6th March 2026 and Friday 8th May 2026 – more information about these will follow closer to the time.

Our exciting Easter production will be performed in the afternoons of Tuesday 10th March and Wednesday 11th March 2026.

Homework

The children will be set homework on a Monday and this is expected to be returned on the Friday.

The children will be given weekly spellings, which is a simple look, cover, write, spell, check activity and every Friday morning, the children will complete a spelling test. Please see ‘Class Spellings’ tab at the bottom off the page for more information about this.

Weekly homework will also include a maths sheet with 4 activities linked to their weekly times table target. In Year 4, children will complete the Multiplication Times Table Check in June so there will be a big push on becoming fluent with their tables. Please see ‘Class Homework’ tab at the bottom off the page for more information about this. We encourage children to go on Times Table Rockstars regularly as battles will be organised by the class teachers, with prizes up for grabs of course!

We also encourage children to read at home at least 4 times a week, which must be recorded in their reading record.

When homework is given in on a Friday morning, the class teacher will mark reading records and homework books and there will be dojos up for grabs. In Year 4, every time a child earns 50 dojos, they are rewarded with a mufti day.
